Where do I start? Some dealers Im sure would just change the engine oil and call it good. Some would actually perform all items on the list.
I just did mine myself. Change all fluids (why not it was cheap). Greased all fittings. Called it good and did not charge myself any labor. Just under $50 bucks for parts.
Now to answer your question. I personally saw a bike two weeks ago go in for a 1K at a Harley dealer. Funny thing, it was out and getting washed in less than 45 minutes.......hummmmm.

Dealer has overhead and rent to pay
Hey, I have a Hyundai, service is not free, $30 oil changes, $70 to change a cabin filter, etc... they also have a checklist, on it is listed to check all bulbs for function, they always check it, and there is always at least one burnt out bulb.

My dealer is fair in what they charge, and do good work... I just like doing it my self... Yes i could be riding instead of doing a oil change, but I get some satisfaction in doing the services my self...

Funny thing though, they state that the 1000 mile service is $300 up front so i new what to expect... i did the fluid changes in all three holes myself prior to 1000 mile service, so they took off $70 for the service ( the cost of the fluids, filter and gaskets ) but no labor....

LMAO. I hope that's true. They can pucker up and pick a cheek if they have a problem with it.

This is why I am wary of dropping off my bike...even with an appointment. They kept bumping me for people driving through. A 2 hour job turned into 10.

Well frankly there's not much more to it than changing the oil other than checking belt tension and a few other odds and ends that anybody can do. Look at the list. If there are any fluid leaks or electrical switch issues you probably already know about them. So basically, yes, most of the time you are just getting an oil change for the price of your 5k service.

Dead on. Or maybe make you wait three hours while you think they're working on your bike.
