Oil dipstick measurement when cold?
#21
With all the engine knocking threads, with this being my first Harley and with just having done my first fluids change, I just want to be sure I have all my bases covered. It doesn't hurt to ask, does it? Not being OCD, just being careful. There is a difference.

lol Wasn't referring to your checking it as you are, especially with it being your first. I should have been more specific I guess. Had a riding bud that would constantly check his oil every time we stopped. Eventually he forgot to screw the dip stick back in after being interrupted by a call from his then g f. Very messy to say the least. I use 3.5 qt all the time btw and never had a blow by issue. And yes, I install the filter dry.

I read that some here put less oil in the bike for an oil change than the manual calls for which is 4 quarts with filter change. Asking those who have more experience with HD's than I do as to why I should put in less oil than what the manual calls for. Appreciate the advice.

Did my first oil change on my 2015 Limited .............. 3 qts is half way up the dipstick when hot, so I think I'm good.
I know this is pretty ****, but I sometimes measure what I've drained out of my rigs, especially the first few times ......... it was a little under 3 qts, which I attribute to the filter holding some oil.
I honestly would never have believed these things needed just 3 qts, but sure looks like thats the case.

Last time I had oil changed at the Dealer.I checked the oil cold and it was at the full mark.I asked the Service Manager why?He said that the level from hot to cold is negligible. So I checked it hot,and He is right.Sorry if this starts another debate, but My experience is that the level does not change from hot to cold like "the old days".
It was once explained to me that after a fresh oil change, it will read high (at the hot level) because it hasn't circulated through the filter yet. Once you start it and get it circulating, (and it gets hot) the level will even out at the full (hot) line.
