1000 mile service on Limited
Ok guys I've decided I'm going to do my own service on my Limited because paying 400 bucks for an oil change is dumb. So for all you guys that do your own service any tips for doing it. Will I need a Motorcycle jack to do it? Can you get all the fluids from Autozone or do I have to buy the stuff from Harley. I work on helicopters but I've never worked on a Harley so My experience level is low but wrenching skills are pretty high. I'm going to dive into this tomorrow along with an exhaust swap and derby cover swap. I plan on making one trip to Harley, one to autozone, and one to the liquor store before I get started, So anything extra I need to Pick up? I'd like to do this on the cheap but still use quality parts. I already have the Manual. Thanks

13 Heritage here. Did my own 1K and used Mobil 1 V-twin in the engine and the primary. Yes you can use it in the primary since it does not have friction modifiers. In my transmission I use Mobil 1 75-140. Just the other day I did my 5K service and again changed all fluids again with same oil. I do use the Harley oil filter to ensure Im getting the right by pass valve and micron rating for the bike.
I too mess with aircraft. I have a Cessna 172 with a Continental and use Mobil 1.
I like Mobil 1 due to being readily available at most auto parts stores and Wal-Mart.
You just missed Auto Zones sale on Mobil 1. I was able to get 5 quarts of V-twin for $43.96 with the $10.00 coupon.
In the Cessna I notice that I do not burn as much oil as when I used ash less dispersant oil.
Also lower CHT as I am able to monitor each cylinder.
With the Harleys Ive owned, Ive never used anything but Mobil 1 so I can't compare for all honesty.
And your right, they charge $400 for what boils down to an oil change. How do we know they actually check everything that says check? Ill bet that if you don't have any problems to write up at time of drop off, they just change the fluid.

You got the HD Manual, you should be good to go. You have all the correct tools? You don't need a lift, unless you plan on doing all your own work. I suggest you but the HD Belt Tensioner Toll. It takes the guess work out of the belt adjusting. As far as engine oil, just get a good V-Twin oil. I suggest a gear oil for the trans & I run HD Formula+ in the primary. I run RedLine in engine, RedLine Shock Proof in tranny. Just my 2 cents on what I use. Good luck. I do cocktail after, or nothing will get done!!!!

You can get a K&N filter at Advance Auto, probably others as well... I BELIEVE it is a 171C, but double check that.
Mobil1 VTwin can be had at WalMart for a dollar or two cheaper a quart.
I use AMSOIL SevereGear 75-110 in the transmission
And use a PRIMARY fluid in the primary, Harley Formula+ is decent, I prefer Red Line Syn. Primary fluid, but it's a bit more spendy.
A jack or a lift is not necessary, but does make it a bit easier.
You're going to spend 60 bucks on fluids, which saves you $340 from what "they" charge...
...it doesn't take long to be able to justify a quality lift or table. I bought both.
