Ultra Limiteds and Coolant Leaks
#31
A 30% leak rate (per the poll on this site: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/new-r...sues-poll.html ) on a $30,000 motorcycle is a reason to be concerned. Hope there is a definitive fix soon.
One was the filler neck material was too soft and could deform under high temps. This would cause the "puking" of all the coolant in a spectacular fashion after shutting the motor down. There is a program for that and everyone with an early production bike should have the filler neck replaced.
Two was thermostats leaking a small quarter sized drip after the bike sat cold for awhile. No program for this but HD will replace any thermostats that show this issue.

It took care of my problem. It should resolve your issue.

I noticed after my recent coolant fill neck replacement the coolant level was about an inch below the full line. I added coolant until it was mabye 1/2 inch above the full line (on accident as I was shooting for the line). After riding maybe 700 miles, I looked and I was an inch low again. No evidence of leaks to be found, so not sure where the coolant is going. I filled her up to the line and will keep an eye on it. I suggest you all look at the coolant levels in yours from time to time.

I have a early Limited. Experienced leaks three times. Once the filler neck was replaced with the new part; the issues stopped. Fill level maintained about a quarter inch below the fill level mark. From my experience, the leak issue on the twin cooled bikes is resolved. I really like the design. It's effective in reducing engine temperature, its basically simple and allows performance enhancement over air cooled only.

The Dealer also told me that the bottle isn't air tight so it will loose coolant very slowly due to evaporation. Mine dropped about 1/2" in six months.

The dealer probably didn't refill the system after replacing your filler neck. It's pushing the air out when it gets hot and sucking coolant out of the bottle when it cools down. It will do that for a few heat/cool cycles until all the air is out.

I'm really not worried. I do think the puking issues has been resolved. I don't feel the same confidence about the thermostats leaking, but we'll see over time.
I rode my 2011 today just to flex it's muscles after a long winter nap. I almost immediately noticed how much hotter the 103 on the '11 is than my '14 110. Loving the new bike.

I ride 164 mile round trip to work 4 days a week, weekend road trips, longer road trips. If I can ride, I do ride. Will be over 25k by June, taking a trip to California via Vegas and Colorado. But I am a believer in the new bikes, the electronics still have their bugs still, but most the mechanicals are sound and better than the older models.
