OK this is a question about oil life. I change my oil 2 years ago and have not been able to ride more than 600 miles on the oil. I want to start riding again so should the oil be changed or not? Thank you.

Yes, once a year as it becomes acid from what I understand, read and have been told.
I have a collector car with 300 miles on the oil that I have let stay longer than a year perhaps 2 years or even more and plan on sending a sample off to Blackstone to see if I have a oil acid issue so I will know for sure,

 

Condensation is the issue. Humidity in your area?

Engines in storage need attention, especially if they are not kept in temp controlled environments.

It's not a lot of work and relatively cheap if you do it yourself...change it.

 

Annual 3 hole fluid change regardless of mileage. It's $100 if you DIY. I buy the Amsoil Synthetic V-Twin Oil Change Kit, 1 Qt Synthetic Trans Fluid, and 1 Qt. Synthetic Primary Fluid. Bike runs fantastic.

 

The acidity is a main issue as our co-member Soundman pointed out.
Humidity and/or moisture is also a concern as Northwest pointed out.

The answer is to send an oil sample to Blackstone Labs etal.
This may be a $50 US cost.
I'd agree that annual oil changes, if DIY, are $100 as Rad wrote.

Only with the analysis can you determine a 1,2,3 yr timeline,
FWIW In my environment, I change the motor oil & filter every 2 years.
Changing at 1 year/ annual is the norm and prudent.

If I don't ride one of my bikes that much I will go two years, but not over, regardless of miles. I also check it for moisture in the oil, I have sent samples in to Blackstone in the past just to see what the oil is doing after two years and low miles, it has always come back good. I do use Amsoil.

 

Would you feed your dog year old dog food?
Would you go on a long distance trip starting with year old gasoline?

Ride the bike to circulate the oil and get it hot. Then change the oil and the filter.
