When it says on my fuel indicator 5 miles remaining, or 10 or whatever, I stop for gas and it is always 5 gallons added. Question is, when you get down to R 1 is there still a gallon reserve? Has anyone taken it past zero and does it show something like Res? Thanks in advance.
by the way, 22 SGS with supposedly a 6 gal tank.

 

With my 2018 RG, I've never tried to go past zero as a test. I have run it down to less than five as a test to know what the limit is for the just in case situation.

I agree that there is likely more fuel left in the tank that what is represented by the reserve mileage. I don't know if that is by design or just an inacurate system. Or that I never full the tank to as much as it could possibly hold. I fill the tank manually (not letting the pump click off automatically) and can see there is still space between the fuel level and the fill hole. But I try to not over fill because if you do that and then let the bike sit in a hot area (I'm in Texas), the fuel can expand and run out the vent tube, which I prefer to avoid.

I reset the trip odometerat each fill up and when I get to around 200 miles I'm looking for gas and a place to take a short break. I prefer to not let the low fuel warning come on, or even let the fuel drop much below 1/4 because I believe you run the risk of cavitation as the remaining fuel sloshes around and the pump having to work harder to lift the fuel out of the tank.

Also, don't know the mileage on your bike, but after about two years or so I started noticing the fuel pump was a little louder (whine). I replaced the fuel filter and found the filter to be very dark, After the filter was replaced, the pump was quiet again. I don't recall the service interval for fuel filters, but I believe I ended up changing it early and am happy I did. I think some of the fuel we get is not as clean as it should be so I'm happy to do that at around two year intervals.

I have taken it down to putting 5.7 gallons in. But that was a test Had 2 gallons stored in sidecar just in case. Running out of gas sucks. Just not a good idea to push it.

 

On the way home yesterday, there were 20 "miles" remaining when I took off , it was about 8 miles to the first gas station. Seems like every mile I traveled, it went down 2 "miles" At 9 "miles" the LOW RNG message came on the ODO. Was only 2 more miles to the gas station. Pulled in and filled up the tank. Took 5.5 gallons with me topping off when the automatic shut happened. This doesn't give me a sense of security.

 

Good question. Any FLH I ran low, seemed like there was more than a gallon in tank when I topped off, which would mean I had about 70 miles remaining. I usually don't let mine go low anyway, top off when I go 150 miles or so if I'm local. Whay suck the tank dry if you don't have to?

 

I have run my Heritage several miles past zero remaining, as well a few cars. Gotten away with it each time.

But, I wouldn't go betting on it that every vehicle will do this. I would even suspect there is variance between identical vehicles.

 

Just remember it is an estimate, not an exact measure. It also seems to never overestimate the amount of fuel remaining, so there is safety and security in that.

My 2017 would read LO RNG after it hit R 10. I've gone 10 miles past the LO RNG indicator and still only put in 5.8 gallons. That is the closest I've ever gotten to empty.

The 2024 is way worse. I'll have 40 miles remaining. Then in about 5 miles it drops to 20. Then another 5 miles and it says 0 miles remaining! Then it goes back to 10 miles remaining. Then when I get back down to 0 miles remaining, I can go another 20 miles and STILL only put in 5.5 gallons... That's the only POS on these new bikes. But it doesn't matter. I know I can easily get 240 miles on a tank the way I ride, so I fill up around 200-220 miles on the tank.

 

???: Let's just gas up before or just after seeing mileage left icons go on. I never trust digital gauges when it comes to fuel. Fuel gauges, when it comes to mileage left, is just an avergae of what you are doing at that exact moment, Anyone that figues and relies that you might have 10 miles left, if it says so, is asking to run out

 

People do realize, that a motorcycle fuel tank is not a symmetrically square box? The fuel gauge is a guide, not gospel. There is no way for any manufacturer to have a gauge that can measure fuel that's accurate down to ounces. but hey, if want to push, have at it.

 

It is good to know the limits. When running 78 MPH I get about 38 MPG. While towing my camp trailer, I get 30 MPG average. The miles till empty doesn't mean much to me. But the fuel gauge does. I ride until the low fuel light comes on, and then refuel. While towing, that is about 160 miles. When not towing, it is about 220 miles. While towing, I have a 1 gallon fuel can with me, just in case.

Depending on where I am, I will usually refuel at 3/4 of a tank. But I frequently ride with folks who need to stop every 100 miles, for one reason or another.

I do not trust the MTE reading on my 4 or 6 wheeled vehicles either.
