I have been looking at non ethanol fuels myself, the draw back is the octane@ 90 varices 93. That said my bike runs on 91 to 93 octane. I was thinking on maybe mixing it maybe fill up at a half tank just to see.
I'll start with what octane, itself, does...its a measure of fuel stability in which the way I look at it, is its resistance to detonation, not a power adder. At 10:0-1 compression, which my bike is currently, it requires a 90 minimum octane rating. In my area we have available 90 non-ethanol and at limited stores, a 91 octane non-ethanol fuel, which I opt for because of shared hoses with other octanes (when available). I don't personally use anything less than 90 unless I have no choice. In a pinch only, because of availability, would I drop to 89, but 93 with 10% ethanol is my next obvious choice when non-ethanol isn't available, not because of the high octane, but because we don't generally have anything else available between 89 and 93. I won't try to end the season with ethanol fuel in my tank because of phase separation being possible with it, even with stabilizer.
Our Harleys are tuned to run on 91 octane, any less and the knock reduction kicks in and reduces timing and performance. You won’t likely notice this, other than the bike has less power. It’s better, and you get more power, if you can find ethanol free..but still at least 91 octane.
I was wrong 93 octane is the norm around here, the same station sells ethanol free non leaded and its 88 octane. Another station sells lead free that is 90 octane but it is 465 a gal.
93 octane up to 10% ethanol all summer long and store with same and starbrite fuel stabilizer over the winter. Bike runs great and never an issue on any of my other bikes in the past. I have never used less than 91 anywhere.
No sir, you can get non-ethanol at a very few stations. Problem is the cost is $6.00 per gallon.
It is very common in UP. So my question was, is it by certain area of down state? In WI you can't get non ethanol in counties surrounding Milwaukee.. But common every where else, and not $6.
Does downstate have some law banning it near big cites, due to pollution?
