Rider Safety: Why Do Some Riders Not Care?
#41
And the selective moral outrage is usually followed by a large dose of hypocrisy....
It permeates all aspects of our society. It's especially prevalent in politics right now...
The other current trend is people calling someone who disagrees with them a derogatory name/label, thinking it somehow ads credibility to their opinion...
It seems the concept to agree, to disagree is alien to several generations.....

I was looking for the correct phrase for this and you came up with the absolute gem.
Self-affirmation is the core of group-think. It is a far cry from freedom or independence.
"The only ones who have the right safety gear is you and me (and I'm not too sure about you)."
A person should assess their situation, risk level, and adopt the safety gear that they feel is acceptable. If that means riding buck naked, then more power to them.

I learned long ago after burning my leg on my minibike to always wear long pants. I have been down 3 times in my 56 years of riding and it isn"t any fun. I always wear jeans, boots and T-shirt if it's hot.
My last little mishap involving a deer i was lucky enough to have my leather on because it was cold out. Saved me some skin, but i am not riding with a jacket on in July, just to hot.
Having them scrub rocks out of my back is not fun,but i like feeling the wind. No helmet or leather when warm out for me.
Don't care what anyone else does or wears.

In my world, I would call that conclusion ("just not safe") "intuitively obvious to the casual observer."

I have experienced several instances that required sure footing when riding.
I would imagine that only wearing flip flops could cause limited footing when coming to a stop when operating a larger motorcycle.
** = sarcasm
**perhaps if rider was wearing socks with the flip flops

Or hear of a crash involving bikes and fatalities.
I know a guy who’s business is picking up.
Picking up bodies and cooling them until they can be processed. Not all are motorcycle crashes, some are self inflicted either with drugs or suicide, and many other reasons.
He buys 6,000 body bags a year.
I don’t want to see anyone get hurt, and yeah it is discouraging when you see people who seem to care less about their safety than I do.
I am not a safety nut, I often ride in a T shirt or long sleeved shirt, no gloves, jeans, and a FF helmet. I am a firm believer that the safety stuff won’t help much if you ride in such a way to defeat it. The helmet is now using you for protection.
If anyone wants to ride with no helmet or just a bottle cap on their head, that is their choice. But when they do it after being stung in the face time after time, I don’t feel sorry for them.
Ride safe.
