Rider Safety: Why Do Some Riders Not Care?
#31
I have been riding long before helmet laws. I never even owned one before 1985 or 86. I was pissed when they did pass. Just another law telling us what to do. Yes protective gear can save your life but as we said in the 70s "Let Those Who Ride Decide".

Do what you want to do and go where you’re going to. I have limited first aid experience and a cell phone.

Tripping in my PF Flyers when running. Roller skates. Skateboards. BMX bikes. Mountain bikes. Road bikes. Mopeds. Dirt bikes. Sport bikes. And full size motorcycles. They have ALL taken some amount of skin at some time in my 65 years. Accumulated total? Maybe 18 to 24 square inches on MANY various body parts. All healed with almost NO visible scarring unless I point it out. However, I will always wear a minimum of boots, jeans, gloves, non-glass sunglasses, and at least a T-shirt. Helmet when required, and if optional, I will weigh out the situation.
And if some of you Karen's really want to get excited, I split lanes whenever possible.
I ride with ATGATT guys sometimes and I don't care what they wear. They don't try to retrain me either. To each his own. Your flesh.......... your choice........ your story.

How about sky diving?
Scuba diving?
Rock climbing?
Crossing the street?
We are mortal. Everything we do in life has risk. There is nothing you can do to change that.
IMHO....
Everybody should be free to choose the amount of risk they are willing to accept for themselves.... I do not want anyone making that decision for me, so I won't make that decision for anyone else.
How about getting into a bathtub or shower?
World we live in today. Judgy bodies everywhere (thanks gonemad). Moral outrage is the cheapest form of self affirmation.
Too bad they can't keep their mouths shut and have to 'educate' everyone that doesn't conform to their way of thinking for 'their own good'.
Mind your own business and let us enjoy what freedoms we still have left.

Never been a shorts and flip flops guy. Always boots and jeans but I hate riding in states that have a helmet law. Last trip across Nebraska, I told my little brother I know why dogs like to run around and act crazy when you take a collar and leash off of them. Same way I felt when I put the helmet in the trunk.😀
Everybody should be able to ride they’re own ride.✌️

If you think getting hit by a car is the car driver's fault, then you should definitely wear all the gear.

To each there own, but you better have made peace with the reality of your choices you made and understand getting on one of these things can kill you. Reasons or excuses don't matter when the bleeding starts.

So another 105 degree heat advisory day here in sunny Florida. I pull up next to a guy on an Ultra. I glance over at him and saw that he was wearing:
rubber shower flip flops
shorts
tank top
no gloves
no helmet
I know it's hot out but it never ceases to amaze me how little some riders care about their own safety.

I find the evolution of my own gear wearing habits kinda interesting.
As a kid back in the 70's and 80's, it was an open face helmet, jeans, cowboy boots, and a jacket if it was cold.
I was young, bullet proof, and broke. 😄
Time passed. I aged. Gradually I started feeling less and less bullet proof. Injuries and age can do that I suppose. I also started making more money. And riding gear improved.
Today, I've a modular helmet. I've all kinds of jackets for all kinds of weather. Gloves, laceup boots, etc. Even heated gear. A lot of my gear has armor plating in it.
The latest addition has been mesh overpants, so I can wear shorts underneath and enjoy the air through them in the summer. And I can whip them off at the end of the ride and traipse around in my shorts, which are a hell of a lot more comfortable than jeans are. Especially kevlar lined jeans.
I'm even considering one of those tethered inflatable vests. In garish green, because I actually like being visible.
But, that's just me. Not into proselytizing. Not an atgatt guy. Ride as you wish, and I'll wave hello when we pass by one another.
