I don't think I will be one, buts of people think m8 sounds jap.
I think we split lots of hairs in these threads. I think model is probably more important than year. Either way he will be happy with his new bike.
I had bad warranty experience on my new bike and decided it wasn't worth buying new this time. I spent less on this bike than my new bike and enjoyed it more, from jump in years.
I don't think I would have gotten 15k of enjoyment from new bike. Doubt I would have got that much difference of enjoyment for 5-8k on old M8.
I do get enjoyment out Rushmore bags and better stereo. Vent is useless, frame is cramped for my legs, I don't think it handles that much better for my skill level, and it is heavier
Sometimes I have to make myself drive my new bike. Tell myself I should take this one since it's newer.

I have a 2015 softail slim with a 103, great bike, great motor, no issues. I owned a 2018 freewheeler that had the 107 M8, great bike, great motor, no problems at all, and my RGS, 114, M8, great bike, great motor.
I read a lot(probably too much online crap), I brought the sumping issue to my indy mechanic's attention, he indicated that there is a vent kit, he installed one once for a customer who specifically requested it, he said that guy had no sumping issues before, or after that kit was installed, and I had no sumping issues on my 2018 without the kit installed. I'm not sure if it's as big an issue as some make it out to be. If you do end up with an M8, you can have this vent kit installed if you're worried about it that much.

The M8 is a great motor. So much can be done with it. But the first oil pump that Harley used can cause blow by through the air filter. Updating to the newest M8 oil pump should fix that. Other than that, I'm sold on the Harley M8. I road an 18' SGS for a couple of years (no blow by), I traded that in on an 18' Fatboy. Upgraded the motor and road that for 3 years (no Blow by). I wanted a touring bike and traded the FB in on a low mileage 17' RGS (lot's of blow by with the 107 motor). I just put the new oil pump in, which seems to have cleared up the blow by. Other than that, I've never had an issue with the M8.
Yes, I've had other Harley's before those. A 103, a 96 and earlier Sportsters.
