Default Failed S&S M8 oil pump

I’m about to add the S&S Cam Plate and Oil Pump to my new RGL. I have heard on one of these pumps failing (unknown cause) which resulted in a trashed top end.

What is your experience?

What year and model do you have? Upgrades? Any breakdowns or issues?

I don't think the S&S pump likes a lot of crank runout.

Why do you want to change the pump and cam plate on a new '23 model? The '23 cam plate from H-D is a new part and the oil pump has been recently updated as well.
It's a sensitive balance to achieve proper oil scavenging and oil supply in an H-D engine as evidenced by the oil transfer and breather issues that H-D spent years fine tuning to where it is now.

new 2023 Road Glide Limited. 865 miles. No issues, no known blow by, no sumping. I just want to do what I can to improve oil flow. Other than the S&S cam plate and oil pump going in, I may add a torque cam, tuner and better lifters. I don’t want to have to change the exhaust just yet.

I am running the stock Harley pump on my 2021 SG with no issues. It's a 124 with all the normal go fast stuff.... The late model Harley pump is a good piece...

Firsthand experience; we've installed & sold an extensive amount of S&S M8 oil pumps & cam plates and I have seen zero failures. I've seen motors go down and destroy and oil pump/plate however that was the secondary effect not the root cause.

I know HD made big improvements but Kevin Baxter at ProTwin HIGHLY recommends the S&S kit. He’s a pro-builder and tuner in HD engines. His word is gospel. If you aren’t familiar with him, check him out at Baxters Garage on YouTube

According to Kevin Baxter at ProTwin, he likes to see pinion shaft runout <3 thousandths but 5-6 thousands is ok. Excessive pinion shaft runout will wear out any cam plate regardless of who the manufacturer is. We’re first checking runout before anything gets changed. This will give me a baseline.
