It's only difficult for HD and Harmon Kardon. Garmin and Navteq (Garmin's provider) does it at least once a year. You get it for free too. Imagine, lifetime free maps for a sub-$100 GPS. If HD would have just licensed that tech they'd have more happy customers and make more sales. It's a no brainer.

I have a 2014 and have been considering the GTS upgrade so I can have android auto. This way I can plug in my phone and get up to date map info. Expensive upgrade but, I thought it would be worth it.

Now I am learning that you have to have the WHIM for android/carplay to work - making me think that I should simply keep what I have. So, what do the new map updates cost - and, have you noticed a difference?

Not Harley confusing the real map dates it is the company that makes the map. I made the mistake of updating once the dam map was already 3 years out of date on local roads. Same thing with my wife's car. On wife's car two weeks after I paid for the update they tried to sell me a new update. Never again.

I went to their site the other day, $149.95 for a non-CVO, $159.95 for the CVO...

If you didn't then you can browse to that folder on the map update USB stick that you created in NaviSync. There is a file named dbver.pinfo which is a text file containing the information you need. If you are running Windows just open the file with Notepad., and exit without saving when you have finished looking at it. The last time I updated my maps the contents of that file was;
HDNAPREM;HMNA2016Q2;20161128. The maps display is MY2018 but as you can see in the file it was created Nov 28, 2016. For November to be in Q2, I guess they name the year's quarters based on when their sales year begins.
Thanks for the info. According to my file, the map update I did was Q2 2018.

No problem. At least they are consistent with their creation dates!

I feel once every three years is a good time spread for updating maps.

I did this upgrade on my 15 CVO and I can tell you it was completely worth it to me, with this upgrade you will have four different maps to choose from, Maps, Google maps, Waze, and Navi crap. Real time traffic with police warnings along with road hazards, accidents and so on is completely worth the upgrade, Apple CarPlay or Android will completely change your Infotainment experience.

As far as the whim requirement, its literally a 1/2 hr Install very simple to do, and works seamlessly with the GTS, full integration with your system. I asked the steelership if they would flash the whim for free if I bought it from them and they agreed, The GTS install was also very simple to do, the GTS is so advanced when compared to the GT the graphics alone makes the GT look like an old VCR on your Bike.

I plan on doing this upgrade when my financial planner (wife) says it's ok. LOL.

No Don. Android Auto does not require WHIM to work. In fact, it doesn't require a hard-wired mic either.
