I tried reading on here and searching with little to no success so I apologize ahead of time if it's been asked before. So here we go.

Looking at getting a lower mileage used RG and it seems the above years are what's going to be affordable. My questions were really if I should be going "as new as I can afford" or if there may be a problem with the early M8's (I know I've read a bunch but I really wonder if it's just guys without a real problem and wanting one) or certain years with the infotainment system to stay away from.

I appreciate all of the input and I'm sorry if it's been covered over and over, I'm just failing at the search option if it has.

Thanks

They all have their sets of problems. Not every bike from each group, but enough to start rumors.
If you don't wrench much, get the newest model and buy an extended warranty. I bought an ESP for my 16RGU when I bought it because I knew I was going to be putting lots of miles on it. Over 60K miles on it now and the ESP has paid out more than I paid for the policy.

Whats the budget? Its a good time to buy a used bike..or leftover new one!! Snows a comin too...

Yes, new as you can afford...lowest miles...a TON out there...look through the classifieds here too..and on the Roadglide.org site...
If you go used M8, Id be careful to make sure the powertrain warranty is intact. Exhaust, tuner, etc..plenty of posts about that..
Infotainment is the same for rushmores that have the boom 6.5..with 19 there is an upgrade...
If you look at an extended service plan steer clear of the HD dealer one...contact Jim at Boardtracker HD...best value goin..

Good Luck!!!

Awesome I appreciate the quick replies so far!

I did a poor job on background for me. I do know how to turn a wrench, but with owning two businesses I choose not to anymore as a time constraint. In short, I can, just don't want to.

What is the option if it's not the "Boom 6.5"? I just assumed if it had the screen it was the Boom set up and there wasn't another option?

Budget, I'd like to keep it under 20, closer to 15 and as under 10k miles. I know I'll be racking them up, I just prefer to put them on rather than have them put on for me haha.

Thanks again guys!

The main issue I has with my 15 was the switch packs, both sides. Outside of that, it’s been a pretty bullet proof scooter.

Just check and make sure any recalls are done prior to taking delivery. My 15 had a clutch and saddlebag pin recall. IMO, Not a fan of the M8’s. Just don’t sound or feel like what I’m used to.

good luck with your shopping, and have fun with it. When the right deal is presented, it will be an easy transaction. - I always say, when it’s right, things go really smooth, no hassles.

Ok cool thanks guys.

The sumping was one of the concerns I was referring to wondering if they all really did it. I know there are a ton of these bikes out there and the law of averages says if 5% does it than the volume is higher just due to the volume in the market.

Anyway, thanks again guys for all of the info!

No... they don't all really do it. Sumping and transfer are real issues for some of the M-8s, but this is the exception, not the rule. Unfortunately, some forum posts would lead you to believe that the sky is falling. There are a ton of M-8 owners (I am sure the majority) that haven't experienced either problem. If I were you, I'd find the opportunity to test ride a '16 (or older) and a '17 (or newer) and see if that influences you in one direction or the other.

Good luck with your decision and purchase.

I do not have sumping or transmission migration on my M8.... Reading all the fuss about it on this site I kinda feel left out. On a serious note there are some issues with all model years as pointed out above. Most that bash the M8's are non-owners that can't afford them. Buy what you like. The Rushmores are pretty solid in reliability. Shopping for those model years now that the M8's are out can save you some cash.
