Instrument Cluster Out on my 16 RGS
So i drove through a pretty heavy downpour a few days ago, and after I got home, I noticed that my instrument cluster was completely out. No lights, no mileage, no speedo or RPM.
I read a few posts here and found that it's a somewhat common occurrence. I checked with the dealership and since I'm out of warranty, they want almost $800 to replace it.
My question is, if I find a used unit, will the mileage reset itself with info from the ECM, or will it be a dealership reset?

You can get a set of Dakota digital gauges for that much, and they're way better! You can input the mileage on them within the first few miles, after that it locks them out. I'd check with the dealer you plan on taking it to about adjusting the mileage if you get a used set to make sure that they will do it.

I know that pre-Canbus, the mileage is set by the factory, or a vendor with factory approval, on new gauges for used bikes. It would be a huge conflict of interest if the dealer could just change the mileage in any speedometer they wanted..... human nature being what it is, I'm pretty sure the MoCo knows better than to allow this...
Never dealt with changing gauges on a canbus bike. I thought I read that the ECM & Speedo talk to each other, just like a tuner, they need to be "married" to work. If you put a used gauge, on an ECM that it is not married to, the odometer will just display "error".
I just found these about speedometers on Canbus bikes, from threads on this forum:
"From everything I have read the mileage is stored in the ECM and I believe on the trip B readout it should say 31. This is a count down feature that will marry the Speedo to the ECM and your miles will be accurate, no dealer involved. If you bought used and beyond the 31 mile countdown it cannot be married to another ECM. 2014-up"
"So long as the gauges are new and have not been married to another bike previously - it should be plug & play
If they have been married to another bike it won't work no matter what you try to do.."
Good luck, post up if you find out something different...
