Default Hate to ask, but. . . At what measurement do you replace your tires

with the horrible road conditions on I 70 plus the almost 5K I put on the bike with my trip out west, my fairly freshly installed rear (had 1200 miles on it before my trip) is already down to 4/32. I measured it when it was brand new and it was somewhere around 6.5/32. So I wore it down 2.5/32.

My front was installed right before I left, and it’s still at 6/32. I don’t think much wore off.

my wife’s Heritage,s rear is shot, 1/32 left, and her front is at 3/32. Gotta order her a rear tire, and was thinking I should just bite the bullet and order all 3 at the same time.

So, as the title states, what tread depth should tires be replaced?

thanks for your input!

At 1/32 to 2/32 unless going on a long trip. Then 3/32 or under. I had about 2.5/32 on my rear before going to Sturgis. Had it changed for piece of mind. Running 75 - 85 for hours in the heat on the slap I want good rubber under me. I never run down to the wear bars.

If i'm not planning on a trip somewhere I'll run them around town until they are bald. If I have a trip coming up I calculate what my wear has been per 1000 miles and make a decision from there. For example if you start out with 6/32" and you use 2/32" in 5000 miles your tire should last approx 15000 miles. So if you are down to 2/32 left you should have about 5000 miles until the tire is bald. I'd subtract a minimum 1000 miles from that as a cushion so if I had a 2500-3000 mile trip planned I'd feel confident that the tire would last the trip with miles to spare. I used round numbers here as an example. YMMV.

You probably wore the rear out pulling that trailer on the slab. At this point in the season it will get you through until spring. I usually replace them at or near the wear bars but It's looking at the overall condition as well. I hate when they get squared off after a long trip with a lot of highway.

I like to replace them before they get to the wear bars. Especially if I may be riding in the rain. I wore my last tire past the wear bars. It got pretty squirrelly. I drove to the dealer slower than usual.

Most states 2/32 considered minimum. A few states, like Idaho are 1/32.

My 14 FLHTK is setup as close to a sport bike as can be. I ride aggressive canyon style, and replace them way to soon for some people. When they don't feel right, slip, noise, stuff like that I change them. I"m too old and fat to drag a knee anymore, but I sure have fun dragging the floorboards now.

yah, I thought about continuing the line all the way across, but added the numbers instead. It was the only ruler I had at the time. Could have put in on the other side of the penny, but I did not. Besides, this way it works for metric riders!
