Default Off the wall question: riding RGS with outer fairing removed

I know...crazy question. I am self-installing the Rockford-Fosgate front and rear bag speaker/amp kits this week. Once I have completed the install, I have to take the bike to my kit supplier to have the factory head-unit reflashed, and then they are going to tune the amp levels for me. I really can't stand the idea of another tech taking my outer fairing off again to do this, so I'm wondering if the inner fairing would stay put for a 10-mile round-trip ride to the shop and back with the outer fairing off the bike. I haven't taken mine off yet so Ihave no idea if it would work. Anybody tried this, or had one apart to offer an opinion? Thanks!

Interesting - how long does it take you to remove the outer fairing?

Even considered, doing the work, riding the bike to the dealership - and removing the outer fairing?

The fairing removal is a relatively simple task. I'd kind of feel like a dick if I rolled up to my buddy's store and did it myself there. If I left it off at least I could say that I was avoiding having it off and on twice. Good suggestion, though.

The headlights are in the fairing, no fairing no lights. I'm pretty sure headlights at all times is the rule of law. (At least here) .

To me it's one of those "just cuz you can, doesn't mean you should" moment's.

The fairing is mounted by the inner fairing, and the outer is a shell. So, structural integrity shouldn’t be a problem. But, the wind could do some bad stuff to the inner fairing where it is mounted, and might blow dirt and crud where you don’t want it, and could blow something loose. Oh yeah...and the wind could do some weird stuff to handling.

I'm not an expert in any stretch of the imagination, but I'm pretty sure working lights and mirrors are required to be "street legal" in all 50 States....not just on bikes, but all motor vehicles.

If I'm wrong, please correct me so I'm not spreading bad information.

I would leave it off and trailer it.

Tuning the amp is not difficult if you can read a multimeter and do a little bit of math. Or just adjust levels to tast. I recommend checking levels with the bike running. It's definitely subjective.

All you lose by removing the outer fairing on a Road Glide Special is the windshield, top vent and front sigs, which you could probably reattach w/o the outer fairing. Mirrors are on the bars. Headlight is attached to the inner fairing.

You say 10 miles round trip. If you kept it at local road speeds you should be fine. I wouldn’t want to do highway speeds though, you have the harnesses whipping around too much. But keep it under 35 and you’ll probably be ok.

As mchad said the new fairing won’t lose the lights when removed. For such a short distance, you should be Ok.
