As you all know, engine oil can contain various metals, water, fuel and other contaminants......changing the oil helps to flush out some of that collected "crud", so why let it float around in your engine any longer than recommended?........In fact, the opposite could be wiser and justifiable...change the engine oil MORE frequently than 5,000 miles.
Yup, exactly.
Even more so the owners manual for Rushmore bikes recommend 5000 miles as the maximum and more frequently under extreme conditions.
The manual describes extreme conditions under Note 4 after the maintenance schedule.
I could change oil on the bike faster, more fun and easier than it takes me to wash the bike.

In my opinion the biggest battle we have with these high output twin cam motors is getting them to cool off. I have never owned a Harley that ran so hot. For me, clean quality oil is a must especially in the summer event season where you are stuck in traffic. Saving a few bucks on oil changes makes no sense to me.

Does anyone ever skip the filter seeing it is such a pain? Maybe change it every other change? I know....just asking.

I think it would be better to skip the oil and change the filter. Really not that much of a pain.

I personally don't see any reason to extend intervals beyond what the moco has in the maintenance schedule. Use a quality oil and filter at a reasonable interval and I doubt you will ever have an oil related issue. I usually do the primary at the same time as the engine oil. Not that much more oil and that little area can get pretty cruddy. Transmission I let go quite awhile but still change it earlier than recommended.

Lot's of folks shorten the intervals. Nothing wrong with that. Their bike & $$. It's damn sure not gonna hurt the bike.

I dont understand why some people have a problem changing the oil filter?

It cant be any more easy, yes I can understand the sensor can get in the way and can be a little bit of a pain without the HD filter wrench, just buy the HD oil filter wrench if that is the issue.

I run Mobil 1 syn in my motor and change it every 3000-3500 , overkill . . probable ,I still live by the theory oil is cheap motors are not.

I do run my trans lube 10-12K though, it doesn't suffer from combustion contamination or heat stress like motor oil does. I run Belray or Spectro 75W140 trans lube and their primary specific oil.

Amsoil say 10 on the oil, 10 on the primary and 20 on the tranny if using their engine oil, primary and transmission fluid. Using the 20/50 in all three holes they say 10/30/20.

Late model stock engines will kill engine oil with heat.
The oil filter is mounted in a horrible spot.
