Extended oil changes
#21
All three oils changed every 3000 miles, Formula +, Belray Trans, Harley Syn in the Engine, also recharge the K and N air filter. I know its over kill, but its my money and i spend half a day looking the bike over checking a few torques, cleaning/polishing the wheels and drinking a Coors, good garage therapy.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. A company can't deny your warranty claim unless they can prove that what you did caused the failure. I'm not saying extended oil change intervals in an air cooled engine is a good idea but they can't deny your claim just because you extended your oil change interval.

I use Amsoil or Mobil 1 in all the vehicles I own and currently do 5/10/20 in my bike with Amsoil. It's not really about saving money, its more about just about doing it. I have not had any adverse effects, I did not test the oil though.
I see that Amsoil says you can do 10/20/20 if you use 20w50. They don't recommend extended service with their primary or tranny fluid though. I was just trying to gage if anyone was actually doing it and had any data.

To the riddle me this guy.... Riddle ME this. Your engine blows up and you take it to the dealer who then denies your warranty because they don’t believe you when you say you’ve changed oil the proper intervals. They tear the engine down and produce pictures showing wear and tear that provides strong evidence the oil changes were not done properly according to the company service manual.
Yell and scream all you want, the dealer is not going to pay. You sue them if you have the money, odds are their pockets are deeper than yours. Even if you eventually win... The court case drags out for a couple years. Is all of that not worth just changing your freaking oil on time in the first place? It really is that old TV commercial from the 70s. You can pay now, or you can pay later.

Not sure that saving money is the reason. It is a reasonable question- Especially for those using synthetic oils, many of which claim a longer change interval.
I use Redline oils, probably one of the spendier options out there, but I still stick to the 5K change interval(10K primary, 20K transmission). If the oil still has life in it, using it longer shouldn't be a problem, I wouldn't think- but to know that you'd have to have your oil analyzed, and that's not exactly cheap.

It's about $38 bucks for them to test your oil viscosity and metals . Plus they send the kit free and the shipping back. I'll be sending my next oil change out just to see if there is a difference between Redline and Mobil 1. Changed the Redline at 3000 miles and they said it could probably be ran another 2000 miles.
I'll be sending the Mobil 1 to them with 3000 miles on it too.

Interesting conversation. I have my oil changed every 5000 miles when I have the dealer do the 5000 checkup.
This year may be the first time I do something different. Last maintenance check was 33250 and when I had the new tires installed, I also got just an oil change. I did so because I have a few trips planned before the additional 2000 miles - and, the bike was sitting all winter.
Before the longer trips - and Sturgis, I hope to hit the 35,000 mile mark -and get everything done (5000 checkup). My thoughts - I would rather do something now - so, I can ride all summer.
Some of you guys crack me up - so, let me get you started again. The first check was 1000 miles - so, if you want to continue the 5000 mile rotation, then, your next should be 6000, then 11000, 16000 - did you lose the first 1000 miles?
