Default coolant pumps

now that harley has changed the coolant pump design on the new 17 bikes how long are they going to make the old 14 to 16 style pumps ? same with the thermostat . maybe the aftermarket will get involved and start making a good pump. i think by law harley only has to make that pump for 7 years. could be wrong.

i was wondering if the new pump could be retrofitted to an earlier bike, but after looking at all the parts involved it would be costly and unless the ecm could be reprogramed it would run all the time. the new style pump looks to be a much better design.

Don't they have to keep it 10 years?

i don't know for sure. i would have thought that someone would have thought about upgrading to the newer style 17 pump.

So, the newer style pump for the 17 will work on a 14 thru 16?

it looks to me that yoiu would have to buy the lines, hoses and maybe the bracket the holds the pump to the frame. the pump would run all the time unless the ecm could be programed like the 17 to come on at the correct temps. wouldn't bother me if the pump ran all the time though. no thermostat, so it would run cool, which is good.

Not sure how no thermostat ensures cooler temps. Often times too much flow moves coolant through a radiator faster than it can cool. This returns uncooled coolant to an already hot head. Up and up the temp goes. YMMV.

So...Buy a pump that isn't designed for the bike, spend even more $$$ on the lines, hoses, bracket, and possibly need an ECM flash that might not even be possible? And not know till you've failed that it won't work?
Then see if it's possible to get a refund on all the parts, and buy what is needed in the first place?

No Thanks. Too Rube Goldberg for my blood. GL2U if you try it.

If I ever need to replace my water pump, I'd just buy the correct one from either HD or an aftermarket supplier that may some day elect to produce one (I won't be holding my breath on that happening).

i would think you could put any pump in there as long as it had the correct flow rate (gpm). as long as HD keeps making the pump there will be no problem.

A friend has a 2016 RG CVO that had the pump go out in Estes Park CO the second week of July. Fort Collins dealer told him they didn't have parts. Since we are from Texas that's was a problem. After no answers from Harley on what to do he had an employee drive a trailer and truck to haul him back to Dallas where he is still waiting on a pump.
