Update nav maps using HD gift cards
It is unfortunate that Harley does not offer lifetime maps and that updates are pricey. Having said that, I am posting my experience as it may help others.
I have enough toys so when people ask me what I want for Christmas, Father's day, birthday, etc., I always say Harley gift cards. It had always been my hope that I could use them to update my navigation maps but Naviextras won't accept that form of payment. As I posted elsewhere, the vast majority of the dealer's either won't update maps or don't know how to do this. It is viewed as a customer's responsibility. When I called the MoCo, they said each dealer decides whether they want to provide this service. Last year, I did the update myself and it went smoothly. This year, I tried to use gift cards.
My experience:
I found a great dealer (Uke's in Kenosha) that was willing to give it a try. I gave them my user name & password for Naviextras and they used their credit card to download the map. Prior to visiting them, I fingerprinted an 8gb/FAT32 flash drive and they downloaded the map. Unfortunately, after hanging out for many hours, the download was incredibly slow and I left them with the flash drive hoping it would be done by the morning.
When I got home, HD said it was okay to have multiple log-ins and multiple downloads with Naviextras since the map was already paid for by the dealer. Using my home internet connection (60 mbps), it took about 20 minutes to download the map. It took about 1 hour for the cycle to install the map.
Summary: For those who want to update their map using HD gift cards, find a dealer that is willing to purchase the map using their credit card. Then, reimburse them for the map plus any other charges. Give them your e-mail address for the Naviextras receipt as well as the user name/password for Naviextras. Go home and download the map and install it in your cycle.
