Starter Clutch @ 6k Miles

Starter Clutch @ 6k Miles
Last weekend my bike started making a terrible racket while starting. I took the starter apart, and could not see anything that looked wrong by eye, but my gut feeling was starter clutch. I bought one made by All ***** and put it in yesterday and the bike appears to be back to normal. Strange that a part would fail so early, but I guess that's how it goes.

It probably was. I had the double row of bearings fail in my main drive gear last year and since I had all the tools I did the repair myself. I think the bearings, gaskets, and fluids set me back $200. I don't trust anyone to work on my bike, not with my life.

Certainly can't see anything obvious from the photo. Why All *****?? Parts look dissimilar, should that concern you??
Does your primary sound alright otherwise?? How's your compensator?? I'm asking because sometimes a failing compensator will take out your starter. Is it possible you fixed a symptom and not the problem??

Cheap Chinese junk VS quality American-made parts. I'd have done the same thing, and will if this issue comes up with my bike.
As for having it done under warranty, that means having some Harley "tech" touch your bike.
Ain't no way I'd let that happen! Good on ya for taking care of the issue yourself and choosing to install American parts.

No it was not, but may have been. I don't want to leave my bike in someones shop for them to tear apart. It cost me a benjamin and a few hours of my time, but at least I know what has been done. There is not many things I would take the bike to the dealer for.
I got the All ***** part because clearly the stock one did not do so well, and the All ***** cost less and had good reviews. I do not believe I have a bad compensator. The parts are nearly identical with the exception of the large gear in the center. The fact that is is wider has zero effect on operation, but I suspect it was done for strength. You can definitely feel more resistance when trying to slide that gear back and forth.
