If you have the factory black heated grips and get the custom fancy heated grips the wiring is different. The plain black ones along with cvo grips are internally wired. All other models of heated grips are made to be externally wired (left grip).

I have modified several of the externally wired grips to be internally wired. This involves cutting the edge of grip and so forth. You dont see the cut when complete but its a little delicate.

They do work well, my only complaint is that after a full season and 20K miles the cross hatching on the rubber inserts is worn down to almost smooth. I installed the factory style rubber grips on my '13 and while they worked well they became extremely sticky on the exterior.

Seems like a lot of work to keep the wires internal.

Yup all worth it to me.... expecually when you have apes that you need a total of about 2ft of wire showing. On top of that would need a splice in there somewhere. I wouldn't even want to see the wire with stock bars, but that is what makes one bike differ from another.
