Default Low Voltage

Yesterday, the wife and I were on our way to the state HOG Ralley in Sierra Vista. As I was exiting I-10 to head south I noticed the red warning light on the voltage gauge was illuminated and it indicated about 12 volts where it is normally at around 14 volts. Not trusting that I could continue, I told my wife that we were heading back home (about 7 miles).

I dropped her off at the house and told her to meet me at the dealer. With low voltage I didn't trust that it would start again and kept it running and headed to the dealer, about a eleven mile ride. It shut off the aux lights and boom box and continued on keeping an eye on the gauge and seeing the voltage continue to drop until it was at approx. 10 volts.

After a couple of miles for no apparent reason, the indicator shut off and the voltage went to approx. 14 volts. I went ahead to the dealer as we have a long weekend trip planned next weekend and didn't want any gremlins screwing with me. Once I got to the dealer, the service writer checked for codes and the only only, naturally was for low voltage. As it was Saturday, he doubted they would get to it before Tuesday (they're closed Sunday and Monday).

It's a 2016 FLHTK with 2600 miles on the clock and the only electrical modification have been to install Custom Dynamics Ringz and Fillerz. My question is if anyone else has seen anything like this happen. I know previous model years had and issue with the voltage regulator and perhaps that could be it. Of course the dealer will ride it around and try to duplicate the issue. All software updates have been installed and whenever it is to sit for more than a day it is connected to a Battery Tender.

Sorry for,the long winded post and thank you in advance for any ideas!

12,500 miles on mine and not a single mechanical issue. I hope the dealer just finds a bad voltage regulator and sends you on your way. Good luck

When I picked up my 2016 Street Glide Special a few weeks ago, I just finished the paper work and was heading home with the new bike and I got five miles and the red light came on so I turned around right away and went back. The service guy brought the bike right in and they found that the plug underneath was not plugged in all the way...Not sure which one as they took the bike into the shop. They brought her out and said they found a loose plug that isn't easy to get to. I haven't had an issue since then and that was about 1000 miles ago.

Loose connection somewhere, start at the battery and work out.

Had a problem like that with the gauge indicating different voltages as you described. Shop replaced the voltage regulator and that took care of the problem.

Just heard back from the dealer and as I suspected it was the voltage regulator. Kind of odd that it took a dump at 2600 miles. They told me that it was lucky that it happened again at the shop. Most times they can't get the problem to surface again in the shop and it ends up stranding the owner somewhere. Whew!

Yep, the voltage regulator can fail intermittently...mine did.

2016 FLTRU had my voltage regulator replaced at 15K. Maybe they used leftovers from 2012?

Dang, the sucks. I bought my 2016 RGU last April because my 06 RG kept eating regulators. I've got 16K miles on it now with no problem though.
