When you stop or cancel your trip it will go away.

I think that it resets when you put in a new one.

I can't ride and have it record without a destination? If I put in a destination I believe I'll constantly hear the route being recalculated over the radio.

If your talking about the gps then on the 3 lines on the screen push that and then hit stop or cancel route. Or something along those lines. I can't remember for sure but I know it's in the three lines on the screen.

I put in a new destination and stopped the route. Isn't there a way I can just go for a non planned ride and record it?

If you turn on RECORD it will record your unplanned route. But once you turn off the bike it stops recording. So if you make five stops you will have five different logs saved.

Where will they be saved to?

It's saved in the bike until you delete it. Before you do that save it to a jump drive then save it into your HD Rid Planner account. Once it's in there you can name it. You cannot name it while it's saved in the bike. I could not figure out how anyway.
