Yeah, negative. 1A ain't gonna cut it unless it's a flip phone. And, a modern smartphone running the screen and GPS? It's not gonna work out. That's why all the new phones charge at 2A.

Most phones will charge with a 1A power supply. Just can't keep up with the drain caused by the display being on at full brightness all the time. The displays are the power hogs, not the apps. The in fairing connector is designed to charge a phone stored in the fairing, which means the display should be off.

With the display turned off, power usage is way less than 14 Watts. Otherwise, phone specs of 2 days plus in standby would require battery packs 4 times the sizes used in today's phones.

I do see the point about using it as a continuous GPS display sucking more than 1A though.

Got a 3A charging cord, a cig-lighter type unit for iPhone, that has an additional USB plug in it. Problem solved. Charges like a beast now. Thanks guys!

Iphones come with a 1A charger... pretty sure they're the most popular smartphone out

I installed a USB port in my tour pack. Looks good and works great. I spliced into 12 volts that was already there. Not a great pic due to dim garage.

They used to give these things away at Trade Fairs . . . . or worst case . . . . . few $$ at 7-11's.

They work just fine.

No tears if one gets lost.

I do see that the phone is charging. I know the bikes electrical system has limits, but is there any way to beef the juice up at that USB?
The power cords use very small gauge wire that is easily crimped or broken. The storage compartment door could easily damage the wire and be the cause of your troubles. If you like that setup consider placing something around the wire to protect it from the compartment door. Are you using your phone gps without data usage? If so what app do you use?

For the sake of completeness: when you do get one of those 12V DC Adapters to plug in to the 12V outlet and gives you one or two USB ports, make sure that it says that at least one of them outputs >=2A. The really cheap ones are mostly only 1A!

Having said that: I am really surprised that MoCo would only give that internal USB plug 1A and not 2. Really, what's 1A good for these days! Oh well...

@Cobra1: I like that! Might do that too. Would you happen to have a part number or something like that for this particular doohickey? I can't really be very long, can it?
