True but if you do this with the bike on the jiffy stand, the filter is tilted down so the oil level in the filter is way below the top once you drain it and that's all you need to prevent the mess.

I just use my PIG form-a-funnel, loosen the filter a little till it stops leaking, then twist it the rest of the way off. I don;t bother with the hole punch anymore, if I drip a little the PIG catches it.
