The ziploc baggie works great too, I used that routine when I used to have a Miata ... you had to be a contortionist to get at the filter and get it out. It was the ONLY way to do it without making a mess. Just be careful your motor isn't scalding hot when you try that method.

Hi, I am traveling now and dont have the info with me, I will check when I return. I think they were #8 (but not 100% sure now) and about $2 for a pack of 10. My dealer wants $1 each, which I can certainly afford but just pisses me off. Use 3 every change.

Believe the plug O-rings are a #13 Buna-n. I bought a pack of 100 at Grainger for about $6. I've since heard most hardware stores carry them in the plumbing area. Don't recall the OD and ID but it can be found on the web.

No problem, but I think I'll have to try your way next time ... that's a good one too! Plus, the wife and I probably have enough of those on the shelf in the laundry room for 20 oil changes (too lazy to smoosh & toss them, lol.)....

LOL I sympathize because had a Miata also which had to have one of the most awkward filters to access of any vehicle I ever had!

Nail hole in filter before removing - genius! Why didn't I think of that, GREAT tip... and the ziploc bag, another great idea!
I have one of these as well and it comes in VERY handy - and it is very flexible:
