I've personally seen overheated, under oiled engines. Two of them mine, and a few more that were not.
If you get your oil temp to 360 (pegged on the gauge), and the engine starts tapping... it's your lifters. They are pretty much toast.
Of course this typically gets blamed on "Mexican made Lifters".
