300+ miles on the new Road King this week ... what I like/dislike
Picked it up Tuesday, it is totally stock (until next week), and have now put 300 and some miles on it.
Things I like about it ...
In the twistees in Danburry yesterday with my kid on the back I really loved the handling. It is amazing how nimble it is for such a heavy bike. Handling is awesome.
In the twistees I grew to love the linked ABS brakes. Loved both the stopping power and the link system.
On the highway I liked the increased power of the 103 and new cam profile. Has plenty of juice, even stock, for getting around gravel trucks at 75 and 80 mph.
Also love the cruise control. Gives me a better way to alternate fingers on a heat pouch in sub 40F temps.
The huge windshield is pretty sweet. I rode 2.5 hrs into work at 300 AM Thursday and the only thing that got cold was my fingertips.
It'll be hard to long haul my SuperGlide now that I'm spoiled.
The not-so-good stuff ...
It is a big adjustment at parking lot speeds from Super Glides, Wide Glides, and Low Riders I've been on for 30 years. I'm way more comfortable on it than the first couple days and I'm sure this will be a non-issue.
The handlebars suck for me. I truly hate them. I know lots of guys were putting Heritage bars on their older model RKs, but I feel like my wrists are turned upside down by the Heritage bars. And I have developed a throbbing pain in my throttle wrist after an hour. The bars have to go, but I'm so broke I can't change out cables. I need a direct replacement with more downward bend.
Seat ain't so hot either. I'm 6'1" and have back problems. The Sundowner and HD pillow seats on my Super Glides have always made my back feel 10 times better on a bike than in a cage. This stock seat is giving me a little twinge in my lumbar facet joints after an hour or so in the seat. Not good. I see a Road King Sundowner in my future. For now, it's fine, but will be changed when able. After the bars are done maybe.
Overall though, I love this thing. When I get the Stage 1 done next week I'm sure I'll love it more. And when I get the bars and seat changed I'll be head over heels in love with it.

Oh I forgot ... the suspension is rather stiff. It felt awesome on the highway. Very stable. And it was great in tight 25 mph turns. Very little dive, even when braking hard. Great with my skinny 13 yo daughter on the back or my 5'10" amazon GF. One thing though, when hitting very rough pavement or large holes I rattles my teeth sometimes. Life's a trade-off, I guess.
Really like the bags, too. The amount of stuff I can cram in there was pretty impressive.

Here is 'Fat Albert' in the bay at the station, and downtown at lunh with my daughter on him. She loves to ride and has been my bike-bud since she was 5 years old. She'll ride in rain, cold, doesn't matter. When we finished lunch yesterday she asked if we could go to Hanging Rock park and ride the twistees in Danburry. She loves that stuff ... which kind of worries me a little.

The first week of August I pulled my Super Glide out of the garage where it sat under a cover for two plus years. Now I've bought a second Super Glide and put in over 7000 miles between them in less than four months. I'm clubbing again and will be racking up miles next Spring and Summer so I need the RK to be as comfy as possible.
A long-time friend (25 years) and former club brother bought an '07 Road King and put 77K on it, before buying another one last year. He swears by them for long hauling.
