Default BoomBox 6.5GT no button backlights

I have a 2014 Ultra that the buttons around the display on the boombox do not illuminate (no back lighting) The only time they seem to work is when I am in the button brightness adjust screen. Can the back light be turned on and off? Thanks

Default Button Back Lighting

I did not know they had back lighting until I read the book, been riding the bike for 2 years. Go to setup, display, then button brightness. The back light will turn on and the brightness can be adjusted. As soon as I leave that display the back light turns off never to be seen again ...

Just one MORE really cool and useless feature that doesn't work right brought to you by the Almighty MOCO, I guess!

From the 2015 Boom Manual:
Page 50 - Button Brightness

Just as you listed, but did you read the "Notes"?
The faceplate button lighting remains off when the radio is in Day Colors mode.
So, it seems as if button brightness is only available when in night colors.
I don't like the night color mode, so mine is in day colors all the time.
It does not bother me that the button brightness doesn't work in day color mode, since I never touch them anyway.

The display is in the day color mode, I will check out the night color mode in the morning and see what happens. Thanks

What version of software are you running? There was a bug for a while (that I had anyways) where the lights would come on right at startup and then shut off after the Accept screen. The only way to turn them back on was to adjust their brightness in the menu - then they'd work.

With the last few revisions of software they have worked correctly and stay on like they should.

There is a light sensor in either the tach face or speedo face I don't remember. When it is dark outside the backlighting will come on as well as the gauge lighting

Your mentioning gauge back lighting, which isn't part of the button brightness setup.

The OP is asking about the button brightness on the Boom display.
Page 50 of the 2015 Boom manual:
The brightness settings do not affect the brightness of vehicle instruments, illuminated hand control switches (on select models) or other accessories.

The OP said he can only get the lights to come on is if he adjusts the brightness.....

He is not asking about the brightness..

Taken from the online 2015 manual...
Automatic Colors:
Screen automatically adjusts day/night
color modes according to ambient light measured by the
sensor in the speedometer

So, to the OP....try covering the speedo with cardboard or something so the bike thinks it's dark out....the lights on the boom should come on, as well as the gauge lighting
