Default Navigation ?s

Yes I know there are myriad complaints about the Nav system and no I haven't read them all. I used Nav a lot on my recent trip and it worked well most of the time. My questions are:

1. Is there a way to name waypoints in Ride planner so they get imported into the Nav on the bike? Trying to remember all the waypoints on a multi day ride is not feasible and sitting in my garage in 110 degree weather to rename 40 or so points on the bike is not happening.

2. I would enter a new destination or POI while bike was in ignition position and then once I started the bike I would lose the route. Is there a way to avoid this other than only entering destinations while the bike is running?

1 I have seen posted that you can open the gpx in word and name the waypionts but have never tried it

2 if i import a map and load it while in ignition and hit go when i start the bike the route is gone not even in memory anymore I have to load the map start the bike start the route then it will stay

I gave up trying to figure it out. I put each stop in as a trip. Trip was over at first stop. Picked the next stop and traveled to that point. Worked out good for me.

You can certainly name the waypoints by opening the gpx file in Notepad or other simple text editor (however, not sure what that will do if you try to open it up again in Ride Planner...). You just change the original waypoint "name" in the XML. Try it with a small test gpx file.

Alternatively, use a different ride planning program like Tyre for Travel. It allows you to rename waypoints as you create the route.

I've tried Ride Planner and don't like it at all. It seems unnecessarily difficult (i.e. annoying). Basically, it seems to want to get you from your first location to the last as efficiently as possible, which is great if that is your objective. If you want to actually create a specific route, that follows specific roads, specific intersections, etc. then it does not work well in my opinion.

When I create a route, I want to plan every road, every turn, etc. Ride Planner doesn't work so well for that, IMO.

Ride Planner works just fine for creating those types of rides.

As with just about any "tool", you need to work with it some to gain experience.
Don't be afraid to experiment by adding a "waypoint" or two along your route.

Of course I admit that as with most things, the mapping software that someone uses comes down to a personal preference.
That is why there are other options out there.
You will always have the best experience with whatever you like best.

I use Ride Planner for my stand alone Garmin GPS that I use in my truck.
And I also use it for the new HD Boom NAV.
I created several "custom" rides for our South Dakota trip, and every single turn, road, etc came up perfect.

The best way to name the waypoints is to stop using ride planner..
Go here and get Tyre http://www.tyretotravel.com/download-tyre/
it is free and you can add as many way points as you want, and you can name them anything you want, and sice it is an overlay of google moving and zooming are simple..
Route planner is an easy to use basic planner, but once you need to get into complicated routes, naming waypoints, retracing route in reverse and saving it under a multitude of different GPS file types it just doesn't stand up..

I have been hacking and creating skins for Igo gps systems for years, and I am very eager to find out if I can get into the system and start changing it.. The Igo is far more adanced and visually apealing then any garmin, showing terrain features like hills and mountians, buildings when in a city, road signs on highways, even Deer and other animal warnings, but I am not sure how bad HD dummied it down..
but as soon as I can really play with it, I will find out..
