Default New derby cover bolts soft?

Anyone else put a new HD derby cover on and notice the bolts are a little soft? I was torqueing to 100 in-lbs (spec is 84-104), and they started to round a little. Anyone else have that issue?

Didn't notice any issue when I swapped my primary cover and derby cover out last week. Were you using a t-27 torx bit? I've seen people using a t-25 and not realizing it was undersized.

I made the same mistake thinking that they were t-25 and screwed up a couple. t-27 fits nice and tight.

low end of the torque spec is enough , and yes the materials used are somewhat soft . It is only a cover , not a head bolt , so caution is advised .

When was the last time your torque wrench was calibrated?

I have a new F.A.T. wrench, but the derby, I do handy snug. You can feel when it's enough.... there is no pressure behind it, it just has to seal against splash.

The same thing happened to me. Had to order new ones and be extra careful the second time.

Yes, hell yes!

Had one of the screws in my Derby Cover actually round out enough (I did not Torque or over tighten) and it did just that. Spent longer than I wanted removing it too. Once it was off I did manage to throw it pretty far, so they are aerodynamic.

Unhappy

So a little detective work. Brand new T bits, so I took a look, and sure enough, the T-25 bit had signs it had been used, and the T-27 did. So, I'm a moron.

Grabbed a new set of bolts, and fortunately, the old ones came out without issue, and the new ones went in without issue once I used the right bit.
