Default What is the clear coating HD uses on the lower front fork legs?

So... I removed those ugly (in my opinion) yellow reflectors on my 15 Ultra Limited's lower fork legs. I was careful, but in the process of removing the right fork reflector, some of the clear coating came off the fork leg where the double sided tape was from the reflector. It appears that HD put some kind of clear coat material on these legs to protect the aluminum. I tried some plain old clear coat paint I bought from the automotive store but it did nothing to help blend this area in with the rest of the fork leg. When I rub my finger across the fork leg, it feels like some kind of a plastic type coating? Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can repair my screw-up?

Picture below...

Well, that sucks on a new bike.

Bite the bullet and take the rest of the coating off and polish the legs up.

You could powdercoat the lowers or bling them as I did.

Put the reflector back on over the damage for now?

I agree that the coating looks/feels like some kind of plastic that has a slight matte/satin look to it. Don't know what it actually is, though, but it's damn tough. The clear coat on the lower legs of my '94 Dyna still looks like new.

Good luck, and I'll be interested in what you find out about it.

Yea that reflector is a safety issue if you ride at night.

What did you use on it? That coating is pretty darn tough. I keep some adhesive remover around for this kind of stuff and never had a problem when I removed them on mine. I figured that the chrome wheel is enough to reflect lights as far as safety goes.

I was with you right up until you typed this.

If you don't like reflectors, you don't like reflectors....

But a chrome wheel isn't visible.

Obviously, if I was serious, I would have left the reflectors on.

Thanks for all the reply's. Not looking to chrome the lowers or powder coat them. Still experimenting with different coatings that will blend in with the rest of the lower leg, but have yet to come up with anything that works. Still looking for input from anyone who knows what will work. The reflectors are not going back on. There is enough lighting on my bike to be seen from every angle at night BUT... if someone knows of a WHITE reflector with the same shape as the stock yellow ones, I would be interested in those.
