I wanted to stick to dealer service while in warranty. 10k service....$525 that included Amsoil in the engine, Belray in the other 2 holes. Then they called and told me the front brakes...that are Lyndall Golds, andcthecrears each with less than 5,000 miles needed replaced...for another $300 or so. I know bought my own service manual...

What they were charging (seems standard across dealers) for 5k service is crazy. No other fluid is changed - especially since I had them do the 1000 mile service (had a coupon for that).
Where do you buy the shop manual?

Look on line or purchase one at the dealer, I paid $60.00 for mine at the dealer and to be honest I would have paid hundred dollars if I had to.

For the 1000 mile on my RGS i bought the oil and filter and gasket which cost $100, changed tthe 3 holes, brought the bike to the dealer for the 1000 mile check and paid them $39.50 which seemed like a great deal. Whiskey River HD in Texarkana Texas

There's a check list in the owners manual. Get a service manual and save yourself some cash. There's others posts on here about not having enough oil after a dealer service and engine started making noises. Do it yourself and know it's done right.

The service manual is the first thing you should buy if you want to start doing your own service. It provides step by step instruction on all systems. I'd recommend the parts manual and Electrical manual too.
This site show the service schedule: https://www.harley-davidson.com/cont...schedules.html
The eng oil is the only oil you change at 5k and 3 qts syn 3 is $40 and filter less than $20 KN. Take the money you save and buy manuals and a Lift or a jack.
There are plenty of videos on You Tube and another good site is Fix My Hog for a fee.
Good Luck

Ok so I have a 2014 Ultra that I have not really rode much as of yet (I know I need to get out more.. LOL) it has 3k on it now. It is however over 1 year old and I have only done the 1k service which the dealer threw in for free. My question is do you change the oil if the bike sits for long periods or do you wait for the mileage. I know in my Vette I would only change the oil 1 time per year even though I am averaging 3k in mileage for the year.

I would change it once per year even if I had not put any miles on it that year.

I've done every service on my own, except one, back in '06 or '07 and that was because they "threw it in the deal".

Get yourself a service manual, follow it, and ride on happy knowing you save a couple hundred bucks.

But buy a service manual.

Thanks... tried that site yesterday. I can't create a profile because the drop-down lists are empty! Tried IE and Firefox.

<WORKS NOW>

Sounds like for the 5K I just need to buy the oil and filter (already have the lift).

Ordering the service manual.
