Stripped shifter shaft.

You guys must really be stompin' on them shift levers!
Go lighter on the feet, gents!
Kiddin' aside, I had a lever come a bit loose on the shaft (the inner lever in front). Wasn't totally stripped on the shaft, just wouldn't get tight on it. I ended up buying a used part on ebay for about $15 or so. That one went on tight and stayed tight.
They definitely should do a re-design on the shaft and levers to improve the "bite"...

Just out of curiosity do you use your heel shifter to shift more often than the toe shift? I realize your toe shifter stripped but i am wondering if when using the heel shift we might be putting much more pressure on the heel than when using the toes shifter?
I have pretty much stopped using the heel shifter except for finding neutral because i felt i was putting much more weight on the heel shifter when banging through the gears..

Heel shifting will hasten the failure of those shafts. I just don't use the heel
any more, except to put the bike into NEUTRAL. I've had two shafts strip on me, and you can't use your hand or anything else to shift gears. You're "dead in the water".

Edit: OK, I re-read the OP, ignore the rest of this, wrong bad part.
Mine fell off after 9 miles coming home from work. . . when I was pulling into my driveway! I replaced the shaft and arm both for $60 at Signature in Toledo, they were in stock. Not a great design, the pinch bolt deforms the first two or three splines each side of the gap and the rest don't tighten. Eventually those wear out dn it leaves the rest loose and just waiting to wear.
Summit sells a replacement, assuming it's not from the normal supplier under a different label.....

Drag Specialties has one, too, for twenty-three bucks. Same potential drawback.

There are some pricier, purdier ones out there, too if you google "harley touring shifter arm."

Ok people we are talking about the shifter shaft only.I just called Harley customer service and lodged my complaint about the shifter shaft striping out at the arm because of soft metal. I have told them of this form and also what my dealer told me that he replaces them all the time. I told them it should me made of a harder metal maybe like the pingel shaft made of SS. I do have a case#3076929, If you have had this problem call and put a complaint in the more calls the better chance of the results we are looking for.For me it happened on two bikes at about 15000 miles or so. I have replaced several of these as well as the rear shaft as well (better lever for those)
I have a size 14 boot that doesn't fit well between the two shifters so I always remove the heal shifters soon as I get a bike. Even with just a toe shifter, still strips. Not talking just my bike, lots of customers too.
I've got no solution, will try the pingel, but wanted to add the best temp solution for when you are on the side of the road...find a small piece of stick that will run the length of both the toe and heal shift. Tie wrap, duct tape or bubble gum it firmly to both shift levers. This will get you home or even save your trip if on the road.
Hope that helps someone!

Had my shift shaft fall on me today on the way home from work. Bike has just about 15K miles on it. Was too far from home to try and limp there to fix myself, but was about 10 miles from the nearest HD Dealer. Called them, they sent a trailer to my location, arrived in under 20 minutes. Parts in stock, bike will be back on the road tomorrow.
Kudos to T.C. Harely in Lakeville, MN. Despite them being ultra busy in the service department, they found the time to quickly send two guys out to get me. I offered to pay for the transport, but they refused to accept anything. Offered to deliver the bike to my home, if i wanted. Cost for repair around $100, not terrible. Sucked having that happen in rush hour, glad I was able to get safely out of of traffic .
