Default Shifter shaft seal leak

2015 RGS with 1800 miles. It leaked a bit when I got it but it stopped. Did a fluid change this spring, heated everything up and drained it. Put 28oz of Redline Shockproof and the levels looked good.

Dealer is replacing under warranty but commented that I probably put too much oil in. I had the bike upright on a lift and the oil was hot when I opened it up.

Great that it's being done under warranty but I should have pointed it out and had it repaired last year. Lesson learned.

I had my 2015 in last month for the 1K Service and my Dealer did the same job under warranty. I will be keeping a close eye out for it in the future.

28 oz... where?

Primary? not enough, and I wouldn't use shockproof.
Calls for 38oz, use primary fluid.

Transmission? still not enough, shockproof is a great fluid for there
Calls for 32oz.

Tranny. Spec says start with 28 and measure. 28 brought me to the mid mark and I left it there.

Tranny level is checked on side stand. With dip stick seated and not screwed in.

Just changed mine with 32oz shockproof and level was perfect.

The spec for 15 is screwed in until the O ring makes contact with the case per owners manual (P.151) same thing in the Service Manual (P.1-29). I don't recall how previous years were checked and memory is the second thing to go, so I always pull out the book to verify. I'm **** that way. Their implication was that I put TOO much oil in, causing pressure, causing the seal to fail. I say BS. At the end of the story, they're replacing it under warranty, which I'm very happy for.

Just changed my fluids and noted the way to check tranny level was different than on my 08 RG. Interesting in that it's the same six speed tranny as far as I know. On the RG it was checked just setting the dipstick on the threads, now they say to screw it in until the o-ring touches. Go figure!

Had that same leak on my'10 RK. Harley supposedly fixed the problem with a new double lip seal on newer bikes. Yours is the first on a new bike that I've heard that was leaking at the shaft. Too bad it's a $5 part that requires pulling the inter primary cover to replace, but it's under warranty so not a problem for you.
