Default Thought This Should Not Happen

I was 250 miles from home, in the middle of the desert, 60 miles from a town when I felt something bouncing around my left ankle. The shifter shaft fell off, even with the bolt still install and tight.

Stopped at the next gas station, removed the bolt and slid it back and tightened it down. Is still loose and can be pulled off. The splines are not worn out. I think I'll zip tie it as a safety measures so I don't loose the whole shifter on my way home.

The same thing happened to me last summer.

Took it in and they replaced the assembly under warranty

Had it happen several times on my 11 Ultra, no issue yet on my 14 Ultra. Seemed to only vibrate loose on long runs. I put some blue loc-tite on it seemed to work for a while then it would vibrate loose again.

Good idea I think I will do that but may use either red loctite or a nyloc nut

If you use red loctite, you will need to apply lots of heat the next time to pull it apart.
Worst is cleaning the threads later of the residue unless you replace everything.
Nylon loc nut or blue and check it with each oil change.

Default Great Exercise

Wonderful way to loose that excess flab. Duck walking ones scoot down the shoulder of the highway. Just remember to turn on your flashers .........

Myron - good point with the red loctite and checking at oil change time

On my old Road Glide, I still run the original shifter levers. I had to open the slots with a whiz wheel to give the bolt enough room to really clamp down the the splined shaft. The levers aren't manufactured with enough of a gap right out of the factory, IMO.
