Pulled the trigger on a new Road Glide last month, woo hoo. Been a long time coming. I installed an Arlen Ness Slot Track air cleaner and it really came alive. Next is the exhaust. I have decided on Rush but I am torn between the REC 17 which is 18 Ga. with no ceramic for about 350.00 or the True Duals 7017 which is 16 Ga. and has ceramic inside and out for 800.00. The REC 17 reuses the OEM heat shields and crossover which is great, but I have read the ceramic coating reduces the heat by half. Is it worth the extra cash. My only concern with this new bike is all the overheating stories I am hearing.

 

I run the 7017 true duals.

Love them.

What tuner are you running? Proper tune reduces a lot of heat...

 

Have not decided which tuner yet. Input would be helpful. This is my first EFI bike and I know nothing. Old school carb guy but willing to learn.

 

If you haven't ordered get on line and look at the Rush high output premium touring pipes. They are ceramic coated, come with heat shields, look like duals but have a cross over. I just ordered some online for 472 including shipping . This will be my 3rd set

 

Might be best to ask the person doing the tune which tuner they like to use.

 

You don't HAVE to take it to a dyno tuner, that will net the best results, but you can get great results with Vtune or AutoTune functions.

There is tons of info on these pages.

I recommend nothing except "flash tuners"... and I will not recommend Screamin Eagle products.

There are 4 basic flash tuners, plus Tmax.

SE product - I won't use or recommend

TTS Mastertune - Excellent product, but you have to use a laptop to gather data for "Vtune" runs

PowerVision - My personal favorite, and what I run, has a handy head unit that I mount on my bars for autotune runs... and then leave it there, but can get put in a drawer.

FuelPak 3 - uses a smart phone to tune with... Supposed to be a great unit.

Thundermax is a replacement ECM. I can't see replacing a perfectly good ECM, unless you are going WAY radical in your build.

I have no experience with the FP3. The TTS and PV2, all you do is plug them in, upload your current tune and save, the load your canned map, and auto tune.

Where is Bass Lake? I know of over 30 of them in Michigan alone...

 

Another consideration on selecting a tuner is to ask yourself if these mods will be it for a while or are you going to do more in the next several months. If this is it you can go with your tuners choice because he's going to get someone money for a dyno. If you plan on doing more upgrades like cams or heads in the next few months you might consider a power vision where fuel moto will supply maps do free every time you do an upgrade. After you know you are finished get the dial tune done on a Dyno

The FIRST thing a man should do when considering making changes is GET A TUNER. It will help a stock bike, and when you change pipes and or air cleaner, you're ready for it.

Can you run without a tuner? Yes.

Will you blow your engine up running without a tuner? Probably not.

Can you expect to get 50,000 miles out of your engine without a tuner? Most likely.

Will it run correctly without a tuner? No.

Dealers and their parts and service departments are a business, in business to sell motorcycles, and motorcycle parts and accessories. They tell you that you can get away without a tuner, because a LOT of guys won't come off the jack for a tuner, and they're afraid they'll lose sales if they tell you to get a tuner.

Changing the air flow without changing the VE tables is not beneficial. These bikes run lean from the factory, adding a more free flowing exhaust makes them run more lean.



Do what you want, I won't criticize, just trying to offer things to think about.

...but there is a reason I won't buy a used bike as my primary ride...

 

Thank you for the input. I was planning on a tuner with the new pipes but assumed I did not need one for the air cleaner. I will rethink that.
