Default First oil change at 250 mls

Dumped the oil of all three holes today and I was glad I did. Was amazed how dirty the oils were after only the first 250 miles. Found quite some metal residue on the primary plug. The other two were fairly clean. The transmission oil was the cleanest of the three. I can only imagine what it would have looked like, if I wouldn't have waited and changed the oils at 1000 miles, as the instruction says. Guys, I strongly recommend you change the oils after 2-300 miles on your brand new bike. Don't wait. Cost me only 50 or 60 bucks with a chrome filter. Well worth it, if you care for your pride and joy.

My 2 cents worth is that you could have gone a 1000 miles with no problems at all. Lubricants today don't break down like they did decades ago. Sure it is dirty. It suppose to be on a new engine.
Once again, It's just my 2 cents worth and maybe that's all it's worth.

Did my first change at 500 miles. Second at 1,000 miles.

Will probably follow recommended interval for the next, then depending on how fluids look, decide when to do the next.

I usually change fluids at half the recommended interval due to the heat and traffic down here.

I agree with your 2 cents.

Almost impossible to tell how "dirty" oil is by looking at it.
You can change the engine oil today and it will look dirty after just a few hundred miles (no matter how many times you change it).

For sure overkill but I used to change the oil in some of the cars that I had in the past at 2,000 miles and no more. That too was overkill but it made me feel good and that's what it's all about.

I'm with you on this. New engine, like to get the oil out. I had just under 300 miles on it.
It's not that it is dirty, it also has break-in metal particles floating in it.

I am aware that the oil won't break down after 250 miles. It's about the excessive contamination that will develop in every new engine during the beginning of the break-in process. The oil filter will clog up much faster thus restricting the flow. Again, what may seem redundant to some riders here, to me it is a cheap insurance that my engine is breaking in in a clean environment.

I'm willing to bet a majority of the break in actually occurs in the first hundred miles. Certainly nothing wrong with changing it earlier. Better sooner than later right?

Even though I agree that the most wear on the engine normally occurs in the first few hundred miles, I would think that if the MoCo thought that it was going to be a problem, they would have recommended that oils be changed at a lower interval.

I know back in the 80's, when I would buy a new Honda, the oil change and first service was 600 miles.

I'm glad you are taking the extra care to keep your bike running great.
