Default Fuel door lock stuck

So I leave out for Daytona last Friday morning. It was 36 degrees, foggy, misty and I'm freezing my a$$ off. I stopped for gas after about an hour and a half and tried to get the fuel door open and its stuck. Over the last several weeks, the button had become increasingly more difficult to depress but this time its stuck. When it would go down, it did it with a loud crack but wouldn't release the door. After about 15 minutes and a wore out thumb, I finally got it open and fueled up. I decided to stop at Tifton Harley on the way down and they couldn't get it open either. They fixed me up with a new one under warranty and had me going in about an hour. Many thanks to those guys. If I couldn't get that thing open, my trip would have been screwed since I wasn't within riding distance of any dealerships with the fuel I had left. Anyone else had issues with theirs??

Had issues with mine too, after a couple of long and irritating gas stops, I ordered a key lock version from Kutter. It won't go back together from powder with that stupid button.

Mine is sticking also. I use two hands for now to get it open. One to push the button and one finger nail nub under the lid to pop it up. Gonna have to take it in.

Mine was sticking also and upon inspecting it recently I noticed that the lock was turned towards the left causing the locking tab to get hanged up. I used a 16mm open end wrench and and turned the locking button until it was centered. I'm sure if I would have left it alone it would have got stuck for good eventually.

I put a squirt of silicone spray on the black lip every spring (again if I drive through a big rain storm. Have had zero problems with the one on my 09

My grandpa used to always say "anything that moves HAS to be lubricated"

I think the "Rushmore" model is the same but I've seen many of the earlier models have problems ... mine ( 3 ) included ... I trashed the lock for a push button and couldn't be happier ...

Same problem here, took it in to Pig Trail Harley-Davidson in Rogers, AR, they got it opened and sprayed it with some graphite. Worked great since.

The stock push button is what I had. I contemplated going to the key lock but they would only cover the push button under warranty. Hopefully the new button release mechanism will last longer than the first one.
