Default 5,000 Mile Service?

I did my 1,000 mile service at the dealer and I don't regret it. I had hit almost 1,600 miles before I took it in and she was feeling horrible. Hard to shift, especially when hot. Shaky.
She really rode like awesome after the service. I just hit 5,000 miles. Should I take it in for a service or can I just change the oil and be done with it? I really don't feel like spending any money for unnecessary visual inspections and such.

There is more to the service than "just changing the oil".

Having said that, you can do it yourself.

If you haven't already, go buy the Service Manual... that and all the parts is still way less than half what the dealer charges for a service.

You can get it for 20% off from Kutter, and if you use absolute top shelf fluids and filter, you'll be around $130 total.

I wish I had time to work on it myself. I work 6 days a week including weekends usually for 8 - 12 hours a day then drive 40 minutes to get home.
I'd rather pay and get back on the road ASAP however I like the step by step guide USRAPTOR posted. I may do this one myself.

I just did my 5K service, first time I did my own. The weather is so bad around here, the bike was due and there was no way I was riding anywhere so I figured I'd give it a shot. I had a Service Manual and followed that for the oil changes, I did all three. Definitely get yourself a Manual, it lists what to do and shows how to do everything. I haven't done all the "check this-check that" yet, it's been too cold but that part should be fairly simple, again, all in the Manual. The 5K looks like an easy service, less to do then the 10K. Thanks to SafetyMan and others for the advice, I started a thread on here and got lots of good info. Here is a link if you want to read through it -https://www.hdforums.com/forum/new-rushmore-models/1020489-5k-service-questions.html Good Luck!

I hear you.

I'm in the oilfield, I work 8, 12 hour days in a row, and my commute is 140 miles round trip, roughly 3 hours a day. 15 hours x 8... 120 hour "weeks", except we call them "hitches". Hitches rotate, I work 8 days on days, 4 off, then 8 days on nights, and so on.

It's your money, spend it how you wish. I have proven to no less than 20 guys that the dealer doesn't always do what they're "supposed" to.

If it were me, I would start on one of your shorter work days, and plan to take a couple evenings to do it. I can do one in a couple hours, but I've done a bunch of them. For someone doing it "the first time" I'd plan on 4 hours, probably less, counting beer time. That way, if you start on Tuesday evening, you should be done by Thursday evening, leaving Friday open to ride out to the fish fry, then Sunday all day.

My 2 cents.

Most of the items at Kutter are already priced 20% off from list. Compare an item to the Harley website, and you will see the discounts already applied.
