How Long Before Better Gas Mileage?
#31
I have 11,500 miles on my 14 Ultra Limited, I have not even had it 6 months yet. I have never gotten lower then 40 mpg and been as high as 48.3 and i do not ride easy.Even before my 1000 mile service I was in the low 40's. I think it maybe the winter blend fuel. Some people see a big difference some a little.

For the GPS to calculate speed, there needs to be software within the GPS unit to make that happen. Since there is already a data source for speed on the bike, they just tap into that rather than more software for the NAV. AND....there would be a lot of inaccurate speedometer complaints to the dealers because they're rarely going to be spot on with each other. Now that I think about it, I don't ever recall seeing speed on an in-dash automotive GPS and that's probably the reason right there. I've always seen speed on portable GPS units.
I would like to find the source of this information, as in, what carrier is bringing the speed data to the display. While I have not researched this (or even had a need to) I am finding it hard to believe that the GPS display is showing the calculations of the speedo rather than the GPS itself. I question this because (and I am not saying for sure you are wrong, because I have no info) the speed displayed on a GPS screen is a simple algorithm, and not really a separate program. A GPS is basically already using this algorithm to "position you" (not exactly this algorithm, but without giving you a college course, we will say it is for this), this is why I still lean more towards the display is showing the speed of the GPS and not the speedo. If it is the speedo, than this is where the program would have to be made, because you would be introducing a display unit that is not a normal GPS display function, and this would have to be specially written for this app, while not that difficult to do, just displaying the normal Speed of the GPS unit would be easier.

The speed data for the speedometer is also a digital signal and I'm sure it was easily brought into the display of the infotainment screen, just as they have done with temperature, radio station, song title, etc.

When I first got my PV from FM, the tune loaded for my bike had a way wrong speedo calculation. FM had it set at 2105. When I went for my first ride, it caught me by surprise when I looked at my speedo the first time. My first reaction was to turn on the map and disply gps speed while I ran the autotune session. To my surprise, both bike and GPS showed that I was doing 80MPH while I was doing about 55. Also, at 90 on the speedo, I was unable to engage cruise control. The correct calibration setting for my CVO is 2233 and that is right on. This told me right then and there that the speedo and gps are the same signal.
If you have a PV it's real easy to test it.....
Here's the thread where I mentioned it to FM: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/screa...libration.html

I have 8600 miles on my limited and have averaged in the low 30s since day 1. I got slightly better gas milage on my 2700 mile trip last summer, but nothing even close to what most are reporting.
I've mentioned this to several dealers and they all say it depends on your riding style. But no matter how "gently" I try to ride, I get crappy milage.

I'm curious. Did anybody try disconnecting the speedometer sensor to see if the GPS will display speed? If it wasn't for all the snow on the ground I would go out to the bike and try it. I think the GPS picks up the speed from the speedometer / sensor. I know that both the speedometer and the odometer both read over actual speed / mileage.

For me, it's not about great gas mileage, it's knowing what mileage you get. Also, it is just one more way to keep an eye on the health of your bike.
Some of the riding I do, I have to plan for gas stops and in some areas, it's 60+ miles between gas stations. I've done a couple Iron Butt Saddle Scores in various increments and the Bun Burner. Eight gas stops versus 13 makes a big difference in time.
