My way for a no mess oil filter change
#12
Here is mine. Cheap readily available and works great. I can loosen the filter a tad, place the cup under the filter and up tight against the motor, turn the filter the rest of the way off and leave it laying in the cup as it finishes draining.
Works better than anything else I've used.

I cut a kids plastic plate mat in half(lengthwise), fold it into a U-shaped slide, slide it far under the oil filter, take the filter off and let the oil drain down the "slide" and into the pan. Works great. When not in use, I keep rubber bands around the place mat to maintain the U-shape. Despite what I use, the OP's recommendation seems like a pretty good alternative.
