Speedometer and odometer accuracy, and warranty

So you guys that are sweating the accuracy of the speedo...Are you taking your measurements when your tires are brand new? When they're worn out? Somewhere in between? If you're that concerned about pinpoint accuracy of your speedo/odo, you need to take tire wear into account.
There is a over half an inch of diameter change over the life of a tire. That equates to 2-4% difference depending on the original diameter of the tire.
Actually, while I was typing this it occurred to me that belt stretch will effect the speedo/odo too. Minimally, but it's there.
Anyway...there's a reason why there are tolerance windows. Not ever thing is constant, and variables have to be accounted for.
My point isn't to slag anyone that has expressed concern out there, it's your bike and your time. I personally just can't get that concerned over the discrepancy.

Remember +7% or 105 miles the bike really has 1605 miles on it LOL

Actually, I do take into account the tire wear. I calculated it at some point and the difference between new and wear bars was a little over 2%. If you add that to the built in error, you're then 8% off. But if you start with an accurate reading with new tires, i can live with working my way down to 2% off, which is about 2 mph at 75. It's a valid point.

This has been annoying me for some time as well because I like to keep to ~5 over the speed limit because most people tend to to ~10 over around here. With ~10 over on my limited I'm still getting passed like I'm standing still. At what variance will the dealer fix it for being "broken" and not laugh at you for it being in variance?

I don't know if a dealer has the capability to change it through approved methods. I've never heard of anyone having it fixed with a solution from hd.
Tons of people have corrected it using a Power Vision or TTS, and gotten a great tuner that can help their bike run better at the same time.

According to a handheld GPS, my speedo is 3 MPH fast regardless of speed travelled. I have checked it at multiple speeds ranging from 35 to 70, and it's off by 3 at each one.
so based on my unscientific tests, the folks quoting percentages are figuring it incorrectly, as that percentage changes vastly with speed.
