I checked my odometer against mile markers on the interstate for 30 miles and it is off 4% (31.2 vs 30) so I assume my speedometer is off by the same amount. Why does it matter? Like somebody said, it shows you've got more miles on your bike than you really have. And for some who don't get it, it can mean you get less for your bike when you go to sell or trade it. No complaints from Harley dealers though because they get you back in for more service sooner.

Interesting thread..... I noticed early on that my 2014 FLHTCU speedo read 4-5 mph faster than I was actually going via external GPS. I'm like others, that know I can get away with a few mph over the speed limit without attracting attention. I'm tired of doing the math in my head, would prefer that it's more accurate. Thanks to those who mentioned that the Fuel Moto Tuner will remedy the issue. That item is next on my list.

Power Vision and TTS both have the capability to update the speedometer calibration. SEPST or SEST (Street Tuner) currently will not.

Checked against mile markers my "certified" HD speedo ran about 3 mph faster than reality and the calibrated (drive exactly 1 mile and push the button,) aftermarket Dakota Digital speedo feels like its reading too low, and you're not going as fast as you thought because its dead nuts accurate. (My wife's Altima is optimistic by a full 10%! In a 60 mph zone I set the cruise at "70" and know that I'm actually cruising at a safe 63. So in 178,000 miles, does that car actually have only 160,000?) It adds up.

The other thing to factor in is the MPG. Those of you that think your mileage is great think again for those who care. I know that @ 4 mph fast I lost 2mpg, kind of sucks but it is what it is. In the end if you keep the bike for 50/60K it all ads up a lot, big time.

This is not my dog - I am just holding the rope.

I will however say that I appreciate it when folks point to things like this. Plus. I have always liked the fact that folks can post things here and both get a response and share their opinions. If there is something in which I have no interest, i simply pass it by.

That said, I never measured mine - just noticed that the GPS and odometer read the same thing. It is I that are usually doing the passing - so I hope mine is not off the other way (showing 70 and doing 75).

My 11 was off and I was aware of that because i had a Garmin 665 on it - and could see the GPS speed and that was slower than the odometer speed.

I just don't know why accuracy has diminished when there have been so many technical advances. My 02 was a few tenths of a mile over after a hundred mile stretch. The 09 was off by plus 2.5 miles per hundred miles traveled. Now the 14 is the worst yet at plus 4.2 miles per hundred. Is it a big deal - NO; should it be more accurate - YES. Rant over.
