So I can take both shifters off, and it won't move?

The rubber spacer is... well....

A spacer.

The photo makes no sense to me. You shouldn't even be able to insert the bolt with the shifter in that position on the spline. The shifter normally cannot slide unless the bolt is completely out. The bolt rests in the indentation in the spline. Even if the bolt is loose, the shifter can't come off. The bolt has to completely come out.

Everything from fender to fender (except normal wear/tear items) are the MOCO's problem for the first 2 years. I don't think a shifter falling off is normal wear and tear brother.

Paragraph 3.

Go see your dealer dude. If you are afraid to ride it, make them come get it.

That rubber piece is there. What is missing is the rear shift lever.

The bolt that is on the stock levers is not big enough to keep the levers on. If you loosen you bolt just a bit, the levers can come off the spline. At least that was my case.

I bought one from Softbrake along with the proper spacer. The lever from Softbrake operates as you describe.

Here's a photo of my new setup.

Not on mine, nor any of the late touring bikes my friends own. I have made custom covers for a bunch of these after they removed the rear shifter

I've never seen one like that.... and I've worked on a BUNCH of them.

Usually, if you don't have the shifter in the proper spot, you can't even get the bolt through, let alone started.

Glad you're up and running!

Same here. Something was messed up with that original shifter and bolt.

Default Lever falling off

I wish I could agree with you except it happened to me also in the first week I had it. The pinch bolt came loose and the rear lever fell off. Fortunately, it hung on the floorboard and wasn't lost along the road.

I tightened it with the allen wrench that came with the stock tool kit. By the time I got home, it was loose again and I could slide it on the shaft. With better tools I was able to crank it tight and it has been fine since then.

I agree, the pinch bolt will not go in unless the lever is aligned with the bare spot on the shaft, but it definitely slides on the shaft with the bolt in place on my scoot.
