Wonder Woman Rides Iron 883 Across Canada
An Iron 883 wouldn’t be our first choice to ride five days from Ontario to Alberta, but that didn’t matter to YouTuber Laura Danielle.
In general, Harley-Davidsons make for great long-distance touring bikes. However, if we were to pick one for a trip, a Sportster would be near the bottom of our list.
Sportsters are phenomenal bikes, but they aren’t typically seen as great touring bikes. True to their name, they’re lighter, sportier bikes, great for tearing up country backroads and showing off around town.
Don’t tell that to YouTuber Laura Danielle, who spent five days on a Sportster, riding it on an incredible journey through Canada. In fact, she did the whole trip on an 2012 883 Iron – which would probably be our last choice for long-distance Sportster touring!
We have to admit, she’s much tougher than us. With the same tone she’d likely use to describe what she ate for breakfast, Danielle calmly outlines her incredible journey. “I’m heading on a cool little trip from Vermillion Bay to Drumheller, and then hopefully up through Saskatoon and Prince Albert, and then eventually to prince Albert National Park.”
To those less familiar with Canadian geography, the trip starts in Ontario, heading west to Alberta, before doubling back northeast. The trip will also have her crossing through Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It’s quite a journey.
Danielle’s trip comprises a lot of highway riding, but she’s still able to take in the natural beauty of the Canadian landscape. The first night, she sleeps behind a storage facility that’s under construction, and spends the morning with laundry, a shower, and a Tim Horton’s coffee at a truck stop.
Seeing the mundane minutiae of the trip really brings it to life. It stands in sharp contrast to the varied, inspiring scenery of Canada. One of our favorite scenes has Danielle warming her cold hands by her Sportster’s warm engine.
Once she finally makes it to Prince Albert, she treats herself to a well-deserved hotel room. Her trip is roughly halfway over. “Today, I’m headed to prince Albert National Park, and I’m hoping to do a hike, then I’m heading back here to explore the area a little more.” With a smile, she adds “It’s so cold, and so windy out there.” Undeterred, she add “It’s 7:30, and I’m hitting the road!”
Danielle takes us with her on her hike through the park, and it’s breathtaking. She spends another night in Prince Albert before heading back home, and at the end, she summarizes her trip. “I put about 4,000 kilometers [about 2,500 miles] on in five days,” she says. “It was so cold, so windy at times, but it was still a wonderful time.” Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
