Will California Fires Cancel Chopperfest?
Massive fire threatens 14th annual celebration of renowned motorcycle artist David Mann, but Chopperfest looks to press on.
For 13 years, Chopperfest has celebrated the function, design, and artistic qualities of the motorcycle in Ventura, California. But this year’s showcase, scheduled to take place on December 10, looks to be in real danger. Because the largest of the devastating California fires, dubbed “Thomas,” has begun to make its way through Ventura County. The massive fire currently spans 90,000 acres after growing at a rate of nearly an acre per second.
The idea for Chopperfest came from David “Huggie Bear” Hansen, owner of The Shop in Ventura. But the simple bike gathering evolved into more of a showcase for futuristic, custom motorcycle design following the passing of renowned artist David Mann in September of 2004. Mann was considered the Norman Rockwell of the motorcycle world, his work inspiring countless artists and builders over the years. Now, fans of Mann come from across the nation to celebrate both his art and the lifestyle he envisioned.
Chopperfest has exploded in popularity over the years, evolving into a 25-acre spectacle of art and custom bikes. This year’s event is scheduled to feature an all-new motorcycle show “If You Build it They Will Come.” With over 18 classes of bikes on display ranging from novice to world-class builders and antique/old school rides to futuristic modern ones, the event encompasses all forms of the two-wheeled world. And, of course, plenty of vendors, a parts swap, and live music.
The 14th annual Chopperfest is scheduled to take place Sunday, December 10 from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. For now, event organizers are keeping a close eye on the development of the Thomas Fire. They hope to make a decision as soon as possible, but as of now, nothing has been cancelled. If you’re planning on attending, you can keep up with further developments on the official Chopperfest event page.
