What could be more fun than sliding sideways on the dirt in a modified Harley-Davidson Sportster?

If you grew up in the 1990s, there’s a good chance that you watched the X Games. Maybe you even tried out a few of the tricks you saw on your skateboard or BMX bike. If you were lucky, you didn’t break anything.

It’s likely that you probably never would have expected the time-honored tradition of flat-track racing American V-twin motorcycles to make its comeback at the X Games. Heck, the thought of anything Harley-Davidson related being connected to the X Games would have seemed like a strange thought just a decade or so ago.

However, it’s clear that Harley-Davidson, the X Games, and flat track racing work together to make something truly special. Think of it like a s’more. Graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows are all delicious on their own. But put them together and add some heat, and you’ve got magic on your hands.

Still on the fence? Just watch this video of the X Games qualifying from Harley-Davidson’s YouTube channel.

The short, 30 second video gives us just a taste of the action, but we’re hungry for more. Scores of young guns mounted their modified Sportsters, ready to give their all and prove themselves worthy of a spot at the X Games.

With just a dozen qualifying spots available, the action was pretty intense. Remember, flat track bikes have no front brakes – that means that you’re sliding through every corner, hanging the rear tire out in the dirt, surrounded by a handful of other guys doing the same. On top of that, everyone is trying to be faster than everybody else.

It’s a dangerous, thrilling sport that’s a ton of fun to watch. Everything old is new again, and we’re glad to see flat track racing making a comeback with the younger generation.

Come to think of it, we can’t think of a more extreme sport than flat track racing. It’s got speed, it’s got thrills, and it’s got the danger we all crave to see. It makes us want to scour Craigslist for a cheap older Sportster and try our hand at the sport. First, though, we’re going to consider upgrading our medical insurance coverage, just in case.
