Today’s Lady Riders spotlight is shining on Shanna. She is part of a local group that rides out of Old Glory HD.

Shanna started riding 4 years ago after sitting on a friends motorcycle.

What got you started?

My husband, Larry, and I had dinner with another couple 4 years ago and they had ridden their motorcycles to the  restaurant. Our friend let me sit on her Soft Tail Deluxe and my feet were flat on the ground. That was the first time that happened.  Two weeks later, Larry and I picked up a pre-owned Soft Tail Deluxe.  I enrolled in a Harley Davidson New Rider Course and my solo riding began. I was finally able to get off of the back of Larry’s bike and ride my own Harley.

What keeps you riding?

I enjoy the open road and spending time with my husband as we explore the back roads to see America’s beauty. We are members of Old Glory H.O.G and enjoy the group rides. We have so much fun riding with the chapter. Riding has become our favorite past time. We just head out with no particular destination in mind and enjoy the scenery.

What would you do differently?

I should have started riding solo many years ago. I actually tried about 10 years ago and didn’t pass the course. I never went back and used having young children as the reason. The real reason is I was afraid. I’m glad I have overcome that fear and allowed myself to become a Harley rider. Learning to ride has been such a wonderful experience. I’ve gained confidence in myself and my abilities.  I have learned so much from Larry, the rider courses, other riders, and of course, trial and error. Skill improvement never stops.

What motorcycle do you currently ride?

2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide

Any Modifications?

I’m vertically challenged, so the bike has been lowered. I also have LED lights and a custom seat.  With the 2014 Street Glide, there isn’t much to do to make it comfortable and fun, it comes that way!

Why you chose it?

Actually my husband, Larry, chose this bike because of the many features such as an iPod connection and Bluetooth. The gauges are closer for me to see and the braking is much easier. The height and maneuverability are also features we liked. Plus it’s comfortable on long rides.

What would you change if you were doing it again?

Not a thing! My bike is awesome and seems to be made just for me. I enjoy riding and I love riding with my husband and our friends. We primarily ride the back roads and pass through small quaint towns. We leave the “hustle and bustle” of the city behind and relax on the open road.
